| 1954 Chevy 3100 Pick Up, Hydramatic, 5 Window |
OK...so a person's life can't be all about building
airplanes. My whole family...that's me, my wife Debbie and daughter Jesse love vintage vehicles. Debbie and I
are on our third 1954 Chevy 3100 pick up truck, which we particularly like because that's the year we were born. The
'54 model is identified by a very distinctive front grille and was the first year an automatic transmission was offered
as an option. This model was only made for an 18 month period so that also adds to the '54's cache.
These are some pictures of our trucks. Our first
'54 Chevy was Carolina Blue (manual shift) and I got the Junkheap next because it was an automatic (Hydramatic).
There's a good story that goes along with
how we got the Junker '54 Hydramatic started: click below on "Starting UpThe Hydramatic", it was originally posted
on the Old GMC Website's Discussion Forum. Basically I got the
old Junker for the drive train. I had a crazy notion that I would put the hydramatic drivetrain in Carolina
Blue. Once I realized I had too many projects and not enough time, I ditched that idea.
Along the way I came across our third '54 Chevy...the
beautiful Red Hydramatic you see pictured here. It was everything I wanted and I didn't have to do the conversion...so
I sold the Junker and Carolina Blue.
I love my truck and get a lot of enjoyment driving it
around town. There is something about vintage vehicles that make people smile and feel good and I like to share
that feeling.
My daughter Jesse owns a 1975 Volkswagen, Super Beetle Convertible. I also really
like Volkswagens and for quite a while owned a 1961 VW Camper that was as pristine as a 1961 vehicle can get. Someone
made me an offer that I couldn't refuse and that became the fund for my airplane engine.

UPDATE:
I recently entered the Hydramatic in a local car show, put on by the Spindles Car Club. The show is held each year at the Marshfield Fairgrounds and typically has approximately 600 to 700 vintage vehicles
on show.
I was shocked and surprised, not sure why:), to win first place in my category
which was: Antique 1947 to 1954. It was great day all around, perfect weather and overload on so many beautiful vehicles.
